TAPESTRY WEAVERS in NEW ENGLAND

Cilla Alden's new tapestry, "Spirit Woman" (26 x 18") was selected for the statewide ART in ME 2017 exhibit, hosted by the Boothbay Region Art Foundation , Oct 14 - Nov 12.  The juror was Chris Crossman, former director of the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, ME.  The tapestry is woven on a wool warp with silk yarns, is full of slits, and hangs out from the wall on a curved brass hanger. Barbara Burns will be teaching 3 tapestry classes in the area: Port Fiber in Portland, ME, Nov. 11-12, 2017 Halcyon Yarn in Bath, ME Jan. 26-28, 2018   Vavstuga Weaving School in Shelburne Falls, MA. June 6-8, 2018 Check her blog for details. Two TWiNE members have tapestries included in this juried exhibit of the Massachusetts / Rhode Island chapter of Surface Design Association. The juror is Marcia Young, Editor of Fiber Art Now Magazine. The show is at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, in Watertown, MA, until November 3, 2016. Minna Rothman "Migration 2015: The Wall." Three TWiNE members have been accepted into this highly competitive international juried exhibition, which opens at South Bend (IN) Museum of Art, July 2 – September 25, 2016. The exhibition will then travel to the Mulvane Art Museum in Topeka, KS, November 1 – December 24, 2016, and the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, January 21 – April 16, 2017 Congratulations to Eve Pearce, Julia Mitchell and Don Burns. This three day workshop is a unique opportunity to learn from two long standing students of Archie Brennan and Susan Martin Maffei.   Some of the techniques that will be covered are :  Dressing the loom with a continuous warp Working with a cartoon How to keep your selvages straight  How to control the warp as you weave  Working with highs and lows  Basic half circle  Transitioning in and out of curves  Sewing slits and more  Evenings offer the opportunity to share ideas with your fellow weavers, spend more time at the loom if you wish and participation in an optional critique session. Level and Prerequisites: Beginning to Advanced - students should have some tapestry weaving experience. Where: The workshop will take place in Barbara Burns’ large studio located in Cundy’s Harbor, Maine. Meals and housing will be provided on site.
